Welcome to ESB Networking, a blog were I’ll document my network and other tech adventures. I hope that the information will aid interested network engineers and technology enthusiasts with their day to day activities around the wired, wireless and security network space with of course a splash of home DIY tech projects.

To all those who Eat Sleep and Breath Networking or just have an interest, kickback, stay for a while and please share your thoughts and ideas.

Hi, my name is Jonathan Mahady and I’m a senior network living in Perth, Western Australia. As a kid, I always wanted to work with computers and I tinkered with them during my school years, which eventually lead me to receiving an honours degree in Computer Science from Trinity College Dublin. During this time I discovered a taste for mobile communications and with the help of two of my college friends, we setup a fixed Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) business to provide broadband services to ourselves and the local community. After all no self-respecting geek/nerd can live without high speed internet.

I joined the Telecommunications provider, Ericsson, after finishing my university studies and spent just over four years traveling the globe working within the mobile IP packet core area, specialising in perceived subscriber data performance. I was assigned to a variety of global operators which provided me with an in-depth exposure to a number of vendor products including Ericsson, Cisco, Juniper and Huawei. I had the pleasure to work with numerous people from diverse cultural backgrounds, many of whom I now consider to be friends and extended family. My time at Ericsson nurtured my flare for mobile communications, the highlight of which was working on the FIFA 2010 World Cup, I’ll never forget it!

My next journey brought me to Western Australia to live with my wife where I began working for an IT integrator within the medium business to enterprise network space assisting clients with their networking requirements. This included presales, design, implementation, optimisation and troubleshooting of a wide range of network technologies. After settling in, I again found a flare for mobile communications and I then specialised in wireless and security solutions. I primarily utilised Cisco hardware but I also worked with Dell, Juniper and HP gear so I’m pretty much vendor agnostic.

In recent times I moved to a major mining company focusing on Operational Technology (OT) where I work presently. OT networks within the mining sector represent unique challenges in progressing critical safety and production goals. These challenges continue to drive my enthusiasm in providing robust, deterministic and scalable networking solutions.

Beyond work, I’ve spent most of my spare time studying for a number of Cisco networking tracks and I am certified as a Cisco Network Switching and Routing, Wireless and Design Professional (CCNP, CCNP Wireless and CCDP). It took me a number of year but I successfully obtained my CCIE Wireless and recently received an Executive Master of Business Administration Diploma.

After I started working on my own home tech projects, I realised that over time a lot of issues I encountered weren’t well documented. Between these issues, my studies and issues I experienced during projects, I decided to write a blog to share my experiences and document my progress towards network enlightenment.

I’ve set a new goal this year to kick-start my blogging and knowledge sharing and I’m looking forward to meeting more of my fellow enthusiasts.

Thanks for stopping by!
